Hydrogenated resin No.0 is recognized for its water-white appearance,low odor,excellent anti-yellowing property and favorable compatibility.It is widely used in transparent hot melt adhesives,pressure-sensitive adhesives,high-end inks,food packaging adhesives and other industries.Hydrogenated resin No.0 from different manufacturers varies greatly in quality,and it is impossible to distinguish quality merely by appearance.The key points for procurement and selection are summarized as follows.
First,clarify the base resin type.Commercially available Hydrogenated resin No.0 is mainly divided into three categories:hydrogenated C5,hydrogenated C9 and hydrogenated DCPD.Hydrogenated C5 resin No.0 is the preferred option for hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesives and EVA hot melt adhesives.Hydrogenated C9 or hydrogenated DCPD resin can be adopted for rubber modification and high-temperature resistant inks.Incorrect selection of base resin may cause formula delamination,insufficient compatibility and unsatisfactory tackifying performance.
Second,strictly inspect core physical and chemical indicators.
1.Color Number(Gardner Color):Qualified Hydrogenated resin No.0 has a color number≤1#in 50%toluene solution and presents water-white transparency after melting.Some low-cost products look off-white at room temperature but turn visibly yellow upon high-temperature melting,which are not genuine fully hydrogenated Hydrogenated resin No.0.
2.Softening Point:Select grades according to processing temperature.Common mainstream softening points include 95℃,100℃,110℃and 120℃.The fluctuation range of softening point is recommended to be controlled within±3℃.Resins with excessively low softening point are prone to creep under high temperature,while those with excessively high softening point increase melting energy consumption and reduce low-temperature toughness.
3.Bromine Value(Iodine Value):It indicates the content of unsaturated double bonds.The lower the value,the stronger the anti-yellowing and antioxidant capacity.High-grade Hydrogenated resin No.0 has a bromine value≤3gBr/100g,suitable for long-term outdoor applications and transparent product production.
4.Acid Value:Products with acid value≤0.2mgKOH/g are preferred.Resins with high acid value tend to react with fillers,leading to adhesive agglomeration and poor storage stability.
Meanwhile,ask for thermal stability test data.The yellowing index obtained from constant-temperature aging test at 200℃directly determines the long-term weather resistance of finished products.
Third,verify compatibility with base materials.Hydrogenated resin No.0 is often blended with polymer raw materials such as SIS,SBS,EVA and SEBS.Sample tests must be carried out before procurement:observe whether melt mixing is uniform,and check for precipitation,blooming,turbidity or delamination after cooling.For resins with poor compatibility,even if the color meets standards,the adhesion and transparency of the final adhesives will be greatly compromised.
Fourth,select appropriate grades in accordance with application scenarios.
-Transparent packaging adhesives,medical tapes and sanitary product adhesives:choose low-odor hydrogenated C5 No.0 with low bromine value;
-Products used under high-temperature conditions and outdoor weather-resistant products:prioritize grades with high thermal stability;
-Exported environmentally friendly products:confirm that the resin features low VOC and no pungent odor to meet overseas environmental specifications for materials.
Fifth,comprehensively evaluate batch stability and long-term cost performance.
Do not compare unit prices only.Focus on the indicator fluctuation range of each batch provided by suppliers.Excessive differences in color number and softening point among batches will lead to frequent adjustment of production formulas.Conduct trial production with samples before bulk procurement,and observe the melting state,odor variation and discoloration during long-term storage by simulating actual processing temperatures.
In addition,pay attention to packaging tightness.Hydrogenated resin No.0 will slowly oxidize and discolor if exposed to open air for a long time.Original sealed packages with PE inner film are more suitable for warehouse storage.
Finally,avoid common pitfalls:never judge the grade of No.0 resin simply by particle appearance;be cautious of partially hydrogenated products that appear to be No.0 but turn yellow after melting;resins of different systems cannot be blended arbitrarily.Only by combining standardized indicator inspection and machine trial tests can you select Hydrogenated resin No.0 that stably matches your formulas.
